MONTPELLIER, France – American John Isner became the fifth player to hit more than 1,000 aces in a season since 1991, as he lost to Gael Monfils in the ATP event here on Friday.
By the end of the match, the towering 25-year-old American had 1,011 aces for the year, having put 12 past the third-seeded Frenchman.
Croatia`s Goran Ivanisevic holds the record for the highest number of aces in a season, having recorded 1,477 in 1996.
Another Croatian, Ivo Karlovic, matched the feat in 2007, following in the footsteps of Isner`s countrymen Andy Roddick (2004) and Pete Sampras (1993).
The ATP did not begin to record aces until 1991.
Isner, the fifth seed, was beaten 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 by Montfils in the Montpellier quarter-finals.
