China`s Lu in line for double in ITF event

Pune: China`s Jia-Jing Lu set herself up for a double crown by reaching the singles finals and winning her second consecutive doubles title at the LIC-ITF Women’s Tennis Championships at the MSLTA School of Tennis at the Mhalunge Balewadi Sports Complex on Friday.

In the singles semi-final, Lu - ranked 504 - scored an easy 6-2, 6-2 win over Serbian youngster Tamara Curovic, ranked 591, in 1 hour and 18 minutes.

The Chinese will clash with second seeded Thai Nicha Lertipitaksinchai, ranked 316 in the world, in the final on Saturday.

Nicha overcame third seed and 421st-ranked country mate Peangtarn Plipuech 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in 1hour and 43 minutes in the other semi final.

Lu also lifted her second doubles title in two weeks with her sister Jia-Xiang Lu. The Lu twins scored an exciting 6-7(6), 6-1, 10-5 upset win over fourth seeds Tamara Curovic and Anna Shkudun of Ukraine to win the title, USD 638 and 10 WTA points.

Indian interest in the championship ended yesterday with the exit of Rishika Sunkara from the singles and Sharmada Balu, who partnered French woman Celine Cattaneo, from the doubles.
