New Delhi: Serbian tennis ace, Novak Djokovic`s hopes to complete a career Slam this year were dashed on Sunday when he lost to the `king of clay` Rafael Nadal in the final of the French Open.
Though the second seed Serb started off well and won the first set 6-3, the record eight time French Open winner Nadal came back hard and won the next two sets 7-5, 6-2. In the fourth set most of the Nole fans would have expected him to win the set to drag the final match to the fifth set, but Nadal played some powerful forehand winners down the line to unsettle Djoker and seal the set 6-4 and the title.
It`s the only Major that has eluded Djokovic so far. And now the 27-year-old has to wait for another year for his quest to get a hold of the honour and become the eighth man in the history of the game to achieve the feat.
This time around, in the high profile battle, Djokovic had a good chance to win the final at Roland Garros, as in the last four meetings he got the better of the Spaniard. In fact, Djokovic beat the world number one in last meeting on clay court in Rome.
But on Court Philippe Chatrier, the favourite court of Rafa, Djokovic came up short, which has forced him to wait for another year to win his maiden French Open title.
