Heavy rains threaten to wash-out Wimbledon

London: British weather forecasters have warned that the Wimbledon Tennis Championships could be a wash out after London experienced one-fifth of its expected monthly rainfall in just six hours on Thursday.

According to reports, 17mm of rain was recorded in Woking, Surrey from 6a.m. to noon, and 13mm in St James’s Park, London.

Some 11mm of rain drenched Heathrow, where the average total for the entire month of June is 51mm.

“At the moment I would say that it’s not looking good for the start of Wimbledon with wet and windy weather currently expected for Monday,” Helen Chivers, forecaster at the Met Office, said.

“Beyond that for the rest of next week the recent changeable conditions look to continue, with a mixture of sunshine and showers,” she added.
