New Delhi: The crowd at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium had slowly begun to vacate their seats. Since Roger Federer had played his quota of matches for the day, the tennis fans had been waiting for the men’s singles match between Jo-Wilfriend Tsonga and Marin Cilic.
Once Cilic won the match, most of the fans stood up and were leaving before they saw a surprise. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic started warming up and he replaced Cilic to partner Nenad Zimonjic in the men’s doubles against Tsonga and Daniel Nestor. The Mavericks went into the lead, but were then broken by the Royals to level scores. Tsonga and Nestor won a shoot-out to claim the set 6-5.
The Serbian had earlier received a huge round of applause when he was introduced before the crowd. While it was nothing compared to the kind of reception Federer received, it was clear that Djokovic too had plenty of fans inside the stadium. During his short stay at the court, Nole made sure he interacted with his fans who were cheering him throughout his match.
As per the schedule, the Serbian was supposed to play just one match, that too on the third day of the tournament. But his men’s doubles match certainly brought a smile on the faces of his fans. On the final day of IPTL’s Delhi leg, Djokovic will lock horns with Roger Federer. It would be an interesting match as both of them are not only world class players, but their fan following in India is massive as well.
