Sunkara beats top seed, enters Asian Junior semis

New Delhi: Seventh seed Indian Rishika Sunkara pulled off a major upset by beating top seed Eri Hozumi of Japan and entered girls` singles semifinal of ITF Asian Junior Tennis Championship at the RK Khanna Complex.

Sunkara, who was the only Indian to enter final-four stage of the girls` singles, quelled some early challenges before getting the better of her Japanese opponent 7-6 (2), 6-0.

Chinese second seed Ran Tian, her compatriot Lin Zhu (seeded fifth) and ninth seed Miho Kowase of Japan are the other semifinalists of the tournament, also a test event for the October 3-14 Commonwealth Games.

Rishika Sunkara (IND) [7] beat Eri Hozumi (JPN) [1] 7-6 (2), 6-0

Miho Kowase (JPN) [9] beat Zi Yang (CHN) [4] 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 Lin Zhu (CHN) [5] beat Miyu Kato (JPN) [3] 6-3, 6-2 Ran Tian (CHN) [2] beat Sabina Sharipova (UZB) [8] 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
