New York: Big upsets make Grand Slams even more interesting. And so far in the on-going US Open we have seen two upsets.
On the very first day of the Slam, Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori was sent out of the tournament by the 23-year-old British qualifier Dan Evans. The 179th ranked Dan outsmarted the 11th seeded Nishikhori in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
“That was pretty good out there to play so well and against someone so highly ranked,” stated Dan Evans after the match.
After Nishikori, the other big upset took place on Tuesday, when an American teenager, Victoria Duval ranked 296th , stunned the 2011 US Open champion Samantha Stosur in the first round.
Even after winning the first set 7-5, Stosur lost the next two 6-4, 6-4 to end her US Open 2013 sojourn.
After winning over Stosur the teenager looked quite ecstatic as she stated after the match: “I know she didn`t play her best today, and this is the best I`ve played in my career, so I`m really excited."
