New Delhi: US Open is around the corner and the top ranked women’s player Serena Williams will be more than eager, after her defeat at the hands of world number two Victoria Azarinka in the finals of the Western and Southern Open, to win the last slam of the year.
In the finals Azarinka won the battle in a high profile match in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 7-6. It took almost two hours and 30 minutes for Azarinka to get the better of Serena. After losing the first set the Belarusian made a comeback and stunned the 16 time grand slam champion.
After the loss Serena stated: “I am number one, she is number two so we have that rivalry which consists of meeting in the final, which makes it even more so exciting.”
It was a bitter feeling for Serena who once again missed a chance to win her first Cincinnati title. Though, Serena failed to justify her top billing at Cincinnati, she will surely bounce back hard to win the more coveted US Open.
