New Delhi: The Swiss Master, Roger Federer is mere three wins shy to add 18th Grand Slam title under his belt in the on-going US Open.
Within a few hours from now, FedEx will be up against Frenchman Gaël Monfils, to try and make it to the last four of the tournament. It’s not going to be an easy match for the 17-time major champion, as Monfils is one of the most eccentric tennis players.
However, ageing tennis superstar can take heart from the fact that he had recently got the better of the Frenchman during the Western & Southern Open by beating him 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Moreover, Federer hasn’t lost a set so far at Flushing Meadows, this year. Along with his sublime form, Flushing Meadows is one of his favourite hunting grounds, as he won five consecutive US Open titles here from 2004-2008. It makes the second-seed one of the top contenders to win the title to complete his much-awaited 18th major.
At the moment, the only player who is looking sharp enough to stop Federer from wining his 18th title is the top-seeded Novak Djokovic, who defeated the Swiss in the finals of Wimbledon, this year.
Along with Federer, world number one, women`s tennis player Serena Williams too is looking forward to clinch her 18th career major. She is the only American left in the tournament and will surely get the support of the home crowd in her quest. Both veterans are almost on the verge to make this last Grand Slam of the year a historic one.
