New Delhi: On a sensational Saturday, Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic beat top seeds Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer respectively at Flushing Meadows to book a berth in their maiden grand slam final.

First, the tenth seed, Nishikori, swept past seven-time major winner Djokovic 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 to become the first Asian man to reach a Grand Slam final.

Later, Croatia`s Marin Cilic stunned 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to be the second finalist of the last major of the year.

Both Nishikori, and 14th seed Cilic, have overcome major career setbacks to enter the final of US Open.

Interestingly, Nishikori was not fully fit before the tournament, as he was struggling with toe injury, which had forced him to pull out of the Cincinnati Masters. But in the semi-finals, the 24-year-old fought past intense heat and top ranked Serb to make a statement.

However, the 25-year-old Cilic, comprehensively beat the Swiss Maestro and left the fans at Arthur Ashe Stadium shellshocked.

In last nine years, this would be the very first time that no one from the so-called big three - Federer, Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will feature in the grand slam final clash in men's singles.

The summit clash between Nishikori and Cilic is scheduled to take place on Monday. So one thing is sure that US Open will get a new champion this year in their men's single category, as none of them have ever won a major or for that matter reached that far.
