Roland Garros was a French aviator. In 1913 he became the first aviator to fly across the Mediterranean Sea (from France to Tunisia). Garros was also a pilot during World War I and was shot down and killed on October 5, 1918, a little more than a month before the end of the war. In the 1920s a tennis center was named Stade de Roland Garros after Garros. The French Open derives its name from the stadium.
