Twins fire long-time skipper Gardenhire

Ron Gardenhire was sacked as the Minnesota Twins manager Monday, one day after the club missed their fourth-straight Major League Baseball postseason.

The long-time skipper, who had guided the Twins for 13 seasons, led them to a 70-92 losing record this year.

Gardenhire had one year left on a two-year deal he signed prior to the start of this past season.

"We haven`t won enough games," said general manager Terry Ryan. "It`s that simple."

Gardenhire had managed the Twins since 2002. He was named American League manager of the year in 2010, was 1,068-1,039 as bench boss of the team.

He led the organization to the postseason a half dozen times, but hadn`t made it to the playoffs since losing in the divisional round in 2010.
