Yousuf has brought stability to Pak dressing room: Butt
Karachi: He was not too happy when Mohd Yousuf was suddenly brought back to the side but after Pakistan`s win over England in the third Test, skipper Salman Butt is all praise for the senior batsman and says he has brought stability to the dressing room.
Yousuf played two important knocks of 56 and 33 in his comeback to the national team in the third Test at the Oval which Pakistan won by four wickets.
"He has brought stability and a calming influence to the team, he is good for the team atmosphere and the youngsters can also learn from him," Butt said.
Former captains Zaheer Abbas and Moin Khan said they were surprised by Butt`s statement.
"Why didn`t he or the team management realise the importance of having experienced players in the side in the first place, why didn`t they realize a senior player brings stability to the team," Zaheer said.
"They have cost Pakistan the series because of their poor insight into the game," he said.
Moin also felt that in Pakistan cricket, the obvious always dawned on people after a delay.
"Dropping Yousuf, Younis and some other experienced batters for the England tour was a big mistake and we paid heavily for it. Yousuf showed at the Oval how important it is to have experience in the batting order in foreign conditions," Moin stated.
But former captain and chief selector Aamir Sohail pointed out that Salman Butt should not be blamed for the fact that senior players were not picked in the touring squad.
"Why blame him, he was not the captain and had no input in the team selection. This was a team selected by Shahid Afridi, Waqar Younis, Yawar Saeed and the selectors. Butt had no say in it," Sohail noted.
"So now if he is saying Yousuf has brought stability to the team, he means it. Butt has to accept the captaincy for the Tests after Afridi retired and he had no choice but to do with the available players. He has still led the team well and he is learning quickly and that is a good sign for Pakistan cricket," Sohail said.
