Vadodara: The few authorised liquor shops in Gujarat selling Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) to those holding permits have been asked to remain shut till December 17 in view of the Assembly elections, official sources said.

Though Gujarat practices prohibition, there are 30 odd liquor shops located in different cities where those issued liquor permits on health grounds as also foreigners are allowed to buy IMFL, sources said.

These shops have been asked to down shutters from 5 pm today when campaigning for the first phase of polls came to an end in 87 assembly constituencies.

An owner of a liquor shop said he received a circular from the state government on keeping liquor shops closed till 5 pm next Monday and added many people would be affected by the government directive.

The elections will be held in the state on December 13 and 17 while counting will take place on December 20.
