Violence hits polls in Manipur; 5 dead

Imphal: At least five people were killed on Saturday in firing that followed a booth capturing attempt in Chandel constituency, which went to polls today in Manipur along with 59 other seats.

According to reports, some people tried to capture a polling booth in Chandel. The attempt led to exchange of fire between the CRPF jawans posted there and miscreants.

One CRPF jawan, a woman and three officials on election duty have been reportedly killed in the incident.

In a separate incident on Friday, two CRPF personnel on poll duty were killed in an ambush by militants in Ukhrul district. Also yesterday, four powerful bombs planted near polling stations were seized and defused.

Officials said the bombs were suspected to have been planted by militants in Khurai Chingangbam area, Sawombung High School, Khomidok in Imphal East district and Naoremthong High School area in Imphal West district to disturb the polls.

Meanwhile, polling proceeded peacefully in other parts of the state with about 32 per cent of the 17.40 lakh voters exercising their franchise till 11:30 am.

Ukhrul recorded 39 per cent polling, while Thoubal, from where Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh is contesting, recorded 38 per cent turnout, followed by Tamenglong 37 per cent, Imphal East 35 per cent, Imphal West and Chandel both recorded 30 per cent, Senapati and Bishenpur both 28 per cent and Churchandpur 25 per cent.

its really unhuman of what had happen in chandel constitutency, killing da security jawams and not giving the people to carry out there right to vote. the government must do something very strong. how can this happen, its unreasonable. people are not allow to do what they want and are froce to press what the ug wanted. i hope people will learn from these incidents and be more uinted to fight against all these unfair game.
