Incumbent chief minister and Akali Dal leader Parkash Singh Badal started his political career in 1947 and since then, he has occupied the CM’s post four times.

While he was first elected to Vidhan Sabha in 1957, Badal’s first tenure as Punjab Chief Minister was from 1970 -1971. He was again elected in 1977 and continued till 1980; thereafter he was again elected in 1997 and continued till 2002. He was also Leader of the Opposition in 1972, 1980 and 2002.

Parkash Singh Badal also served in the Union Ministry as Agriculture and Irrigation minister under the leadership of Morarji Desai.

The four-time chief minister was detained in Karnal jail in connection with Civil Liberties Agitation later under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act during the Indian Emergency. He has been to jail several times for the cause of Punjab, Punjabis and Punjabiat including the Dharam Yudh Morcha. In total he has spent 17 years in jail as a political prisoner fighting for the bright future of Punjab.

Other positions held by Badal during his political career are - Member -working Committee of Shiromani Akali Dal, Senior Vice President of SAD. Member - Working Committee of SGPC. Remained President of Shiromani Akali Dal for 4 terms. Chairman - Parliamentry Board of SAD.

He was president of the Akali Dal from 1996 to 2008 when he gave way to his son Sukhbir Singh Badal. He is now the patron of Shiromani Akali Dal.

A case was filed by former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh against the Badal family in 2003 over amassing assets worth over Rs 30 billion (Rs 3,000 crore). In reply, in the chargesheet presented before the court, the Badal family`s assets were valued at over Rs 780 million (Rs 78 crore).

However, a local court in Mohali acquitted Badal along with his wife Surinder Kaur, son and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir and eight others in the disproportionate assets case.

This time around Badal is contesting from Lambi constituency and is pitted against his own bothers. While his younger brother Gurdas Badal is in the fray as the People`s Party of Punjab (PPP) candidate, their first cousin Maheshinder Singh Badal is the Congress candidate.
