Former chief minister and present state Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh will contest from Patiala assembly seat. He served as the Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007. His secular credentials take him above the other present day leaders. He is a perfect mix of intellect and politics. His secular credentials take him above the other present day leaders. People who have worked with him describe him as ‘decisive’ and ‘forward-looking’.

A soldier-turned-politician, Amarinder Singh was inducted into the Congress by Rajiv Gandhi who was also a personal friend. Amarinder was elected to the Lok Sabha on an Indian National Congress ticket in 1980. However, in 1984 he strongly opposed ‘Operation Blue Star’ of Indira Gandhi and resigned from Parliament as well as from the Congress.

Amarinder Singh is the son of late Maharaja of Patiala His Highness Yadavindra Singh , and Her Highness Maharani Mohinder Kaur , Rajmata of Patiala. He is the head of the royal house of Patiala belonging to the Phulkian dynasty.

The Patiala royal joined the Akali Dal, but broke away to from the Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthic), which later merged with the Congress.

At present, Amarinder Singh is the president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and is a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the Vidhan Sabha.

During his term as chief minister of the state he undertook major development initiatives and decisions for the development of Punjab. His term as Congress Legislative Party leader saw the passage of Termination of Punjab Water Sharing Agreement Act, 2004 for which he is known as savior of waters of Punjab.

Prior to joining politics, he was a commissioned officer in the Indian Army but resigned in early 1965. But he rejoined the Army immediately to take part in the war against Pakistan. After India emerged victorious, Singh resigned again in early 1966.

He has written various books like ‘Lest We Forget’ that speaks about the battles fought in the 1965 War and ‘A Ridge Too Far’ on the Kargil conflict. His latest book ‘The Last Sunset – Rise and Fall of the Lahore Durbar’, on the tallest Sikh king Maharaja Ranjit Singh, is already a best-seller and has received positive reviews world over.
