Akhilesh to be next CM of UP: Sources

Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son and party’s state unit president Akhilesh Yadav is most likely to be appointed as the new chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, the sources claimed on Wednesday.

According to the sources, a number of Samajwadi Party Parliamentary Board members today pitched for Akhilesh as the Chief Minister.

The party parliamentary board members, who met this morning to discuss the issue, aired their views in favour of the youth face of the party Akhilesh for CM's post, party sources said.

Sources also said that Samajwadi Party spokesperson Mohan Singh may formally nominate Akhilesh Yadav’s name for the top job. Samajawadi Party supremo has also seconded the proposal to make his son the new chief minister,, where the party returned to power after dislodging the Mayawati government.

However, the final decision would be taken in this regard by the party chief, who will be holding a meeting with newly-elected legislators later in the day.

Mulayam is also expected to meet UP Governor BL Joshi in a short while to formally stake claim to form the government in the state.

Although, Mulayam Singh is still the supreme leader of the party, there is a growing clamour for the coronation of his son Akhilesh, who is the man responsible for his party’s historic win in UP.

Though, Akhilesh has himself said that the reins of power will remain in the hands of his father, most of the newly-elected party MLAs, senior leaders and party workers feel that it is time for rewarding Akhilesh for pulling the party out of morass and scripting a new image for it.

When asked who will be the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh told reporters yesterday with all humility that Neta ji will be in the hot seat.

He and other party leaders including Ram Gopal Yadav and Shivpal Singh Yadav also categorically ruled out that there was any dispute or any ambiguity over the leadership issue.

However, they maintained that any decision taken by the party chief and the parliamentary board would be acceptable to all of them.

So in this context, it would be interesting to see if SP chief feels the pulse of his supporters and decides to anoint his son-who has been the game changer for Samajawadi Party- the chief minister of the state to carry forward his legacy and fulfil the hopes of the state.
