New Delhi: With atmosphere heating up ahead of the forthcoming Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, BJP national president Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday took pot-shots at the Gandhi family.

With Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul and daughter Priyanka campaigning for UP polls, Gadkari said they would meet the same fate which they met in Bihar elections.

Rahul and Sonia went to Bihar also but they failed miserably there, Gadkari said, adding the same will happen to the Congress in Uttar Pradesh.

The BJP president also hit out at the Congress government at the Centre on the issue of 4.5% sub-quota for Muslims in the 27% OBC reservation, saying caste-based reservation is a very bad idea.

Gadkari said he fears caste reservation may lead to riots in UP and at other places.

All parties are playing the Muslim quota card but the minority’s condition only worsened during the previous government’s tenure, he rued.

On his party’s strategy for the UP polls, Gadkari said they do not have any pre-poll alliance in the state.

In response to a question on the probable chief ministerial candidates, the BJP leader said Rajnath Singh, Uma Bharti, Surya Pratap Sahi and Kalraj Mishra are the main candidates.

He however added that Rajnath Singh is more interested in national politics than leading a government in a state.

He further said that the party has yet to decide from where Uma Bharti will contest the polls in UP.
