Dehra Dun: Despite falling short of majority, Congress and BJP on Wednesday began wooing potential allies in a bid to form a government in Uttarakhand, where assembly polls produced a fractured mandate, with their top leaders trying to establish contacts with BSP, independents and Uttarakhand Kranti Dal.

Senior Congress leader Vijay Bahuguna claimed BSP and some independents have promised support to Congress. "We are confident of getting support from BSP and independents," Bahuguna said.

A delegation of Congress party leaders also went to New Delhi to hold talks with the party high command on the issue of formation of new government. Ruling BJP too began similar efforts and trying to get in touch with independents and BSP.

"We are assessing the political situation. In case, the party thinks that it is appropriate to form new govenment, we will surely stake our claim," said outgoing chief minister B C Khanduri as the party bigwigs, including Rajnath Singh and Ananth Kumar, held confabulations here on the issue.

While Congress has emerged as the single largest party with 32 seats in the 70-member House, BJP finished one less seat in a cliff-hanger contest for the state assembly polls.
