New Delhi: The Election Commission on Tuesday denied senior BJP leader Uma Bharti to take out a Rath Yatra in Lucknow during the Assembly elections in case her party won’t comply with the formalities.

"Permission was not granted as the party failed to submit a certificate from the regional transport office or an affidavit that it conforms to the Motor Vehicle Act," Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh Umesh Sinha said.

As per the directive of Election Commission, a certificate from the RTO office or an affidavit was mandatory for vehicles being used in electioneering.

“The technical aspect has been communicated to the party. Permission would be granted once the certificate is submitted,” Sinha said.

Uma Bharti was scheduled to start a Rath Yatra as a part of her poll campaign in the UP Assembly elections.

BJP president Nitin Gadkari was supposed to flag off the Rath Yatra. The Rath would create public awareness on a corruption-free state, party sources claimed.
