Lok Sabha polls 2014 kicked off on Monday with nearly six million people casting their vote in five constituencies in Assam and one of two seats in Tripura. The Election Commission in New Delhi said the voter turnout in Assam was approximately 78 percent while in Tripura it was 85 percent.
A high turnout of 85 percent was recorded for one Lok Sabha seat in Tripura, while Assam registered 76 percent in five seats in the first phase of the elections which began peacefully on Monday from the country`s North East.
Assam BJP chief Sarbananda Sonowal moving out from Dibrugarh may have given a sigh of relief to Congress` five-time MP from the seat Paban Singh Ghatowar but has made things tough for Congress` Ranee Narah, who is left to fight against Sonowal in Lakhimpur.
The people of Assam are in a state of shock. What has angered them is the recent incident of an alleged gang-rape in Lakhimpur district, which has eerie similarities to the December 16, 2012 Delhi gang-rape.
Four men allegedly raped a woman inside a tempo, gouged out her eyes and beat her before throwing the victim out of the vehicle leading to her death in upper Assam`s Lakhimpur district, sparking outrage from locals.
