A deep sea survey near a remote Japanese island in the Pacific has confirmed a rich deposit of rare earth minerals in mud taken from the seabed.
North Korea wants foreign
companies to help develop what the impoverished communist
state says is its abundance of rare earth metals, a
pro-Pyongyang newspaper said.
China plans to tighten control over
rare earths producers and restrict output in a five-year
development strategy, amid concern
abroad about plans to reduce exports of the exotic minerals
used in high-tech goods.
A European Union envoy said he will press Chinese officials to maintain exports of rare earths needed by high-tech industry.
Vietnam will help to supply Japan with rare earth minerals used in high-tech products.
