Bihar will be the first state to adopt social audit of the performance of anganwadi centres.
Accusing the Uttar Pradesh
government of adopting a "lackadaisical approach" in
implementing the MPLAD scheme in the state, an RLD MP has
supported the idea of social audit of the programme.
Members of Parliament seeking social audit of all and sundry programmes are not willing for such a monitoring when it comes to the MPLAD Scheme, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said Thursday.
Critical over leakage of funds meant for the rural poor, the NHRC has suggested that the govt should conduct a social audit of flagship programmes.
The audit watchdog has recommended this as part of the new audit regime that is likely to scrutinise the flow of hundreds of crores of rupees spent on schemes under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
