A three-judge bench headed by Justice G S Singhvi accepted Anand`s unconditional apology, his offer to provide free legal aid to the poor for a year and to donate Rs 21 lakh for improving the legal education infrastructure.
The SC has asked noted lawyer RK Anand, convicted on contempt of court charges for trying to influence a witness in the BMW hit-and-run case, to either provide free legal aid to poor litigants or face punishment.
Sanjeev Nanda, convicted for his
involvement in the infamous BMW hit-and-run case, was freed
from jail three months before his two-year jail term ended due
to his good conduct, a senior jail official said on Saturday.
Even as it reduced the sentence of Sanjeev Nanda, convicted for running over and killing six people with his BMW in 1999, the Delhi High Court expressed displeasure over the weakening of the prosecution`s stand.
The Delhi High Court on Moday came
down heavily on Sunil Kulkarni, a Mumbai-based key witness in
BMW hit-and-run case, by terming him as "the most dishonest,
unreliable, untrustworthy and untruthful witness."
