China defended its government-funded Confucius Institute programmes on Friday after new questions were raised in the United States about their transparency and effect on academic freedom.
China on Monday reopened the Confucius Institute in Kabul University to teach Chinese language, 18 months after it was closed due to violence.
The US State Department has ordered Chinese academics with visas that offer cultural and educational exchange programmes to leave the country.
