A death row convict from Chhattisgarh on Tuesday became the first person to get the benefit of the Supreme Court's recent ruling that condemned prisoners must be given an open court hearing on the petition seeking review of the capital punishment.
The Supreme Court Tuesday held that in the cases where the death sentence has been upheld by the apex court, the death convict will have a right that his petition seeking review of the verdict upholding death sentence will be heard by the three judges bench in an open court and he will be accorded half an hour hearing.
Two out of the four death row convicts in the December 16 gangrape and murder case on Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking a stay on their execution and reversal of the Delhi High Court verdict upholding their conviction and the punishment.
