The Church of England on Monday broke with a centuries-old tradition by paving the way for the appointment of female bishops.
The Church of England`s governing body narrowly blocked a move to permit women to serve as bishops, leaving the church facing more years of contentious debate.
The action by the church`s General Synod to adjourn debate means that the issue will not come up again until November.
