Taking up the latest instance of arrest of six fishermen by the Lankan Navy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday sought the Centre's intervention for their release, and called for retrieval of Katchatheevu.
Local fishermen, who were on indefinite strike since June 8 demanding release of five of their counterparts arrested by Lankan Navy two years ago, on Sunday decided to call it off following an assurance given by Minister of State for Heavy Industries Pon Radhakrishan, a representative of the fishermen`s association today said.
A Sri Lankan court Friday extended till October 1 the remand of 31 fishermen, arrested by Lankan Navy on July 30 for allegedly fishing in the island country`s waters, fishermen welfare organisation sources said.
Twenty-eight Tamil Nadu fishermen were detained by Sri Lankan Naval personnel on the charge of entering the island waters in the Palk Strait but released after a stern warning on Saturday, officials here said.
