The South Korean navy held a rare live-fire drill near a set of disputed islands on Friday, brushing off angry protests from co-claimant Japan, which called the exercises "deplorable".

Taiwan`s coastguards said today that Taipei had staged a live-fire drill within a hotly-contested island chain in the South China Sea, in a move that risks stoking regional tensions.
South Korea said the drill, the second of its kind in the area this year, was routine and had passed without incident.
