Russia on Sunday welcomed a decision by Syria`s opposition to attend an international peace conference next week alongside representatives of a regime they seek to overthrow.
Russia appealed Saturday for a political transition in Syria, a day after UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi held tripartite talks in Geneva on ending the nearly two-year-old crisis.
Russia has sent an invitation for talks to the head of the opposition Syrian National Coalition, Russia`s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said.
In a volte-face, the Russian Foreign Ministry denied that a top diplomat said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is losing control of his country.
At the same time, Bogdanov reaffirmed Russia`s call for a compromise, saying it would take the opposition a long time to defeat the regime and Syria would suffer heavy casualties.
Russia will also hold talks with officials from Syrian President Bashar Assad`s government and UN envoy Kofi Annan this month.
