Fitch's India upgrade reflects better fundamentals: Montek

Enthused by upgrade of India's credit outlook to stable from negative by global rating agency Fitch, Plan Panel Deputy Chairman Montek Ahluwalia on Wednesday said it reflects strengthening of basic fundamentals of economy and hoped further improvement in coming months.

Pursuing good economic practices is not always easy politically, but anyone who thinks it is impossible may be "damming the country", Planning Commission Deputy Montek Singh Ahluwalia said Thursday.

India's leading economic strategist also stressed that the pace of poverty reduction in the country was within the target set by the government.

"It (GDP growth rate) would be somewhere between 5 and 5.5 percent. If everything worked perfectly, I would not rule out seven percent next year (2013-14)", Ahluwalia said in an interview.
