Government is preparing the National Population Register incorporating all genuine Indian citizens and will give them national identity cards in a time bound manner.
The issue of national identity cards for citizens has been prioritised by the government which Wednesday asked officials to bring proposals in this regard for approval at the earliest.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday asked officials to speedily create a National Population Register (NPR).
President Pratibha Patil got herself enrolled under the National Population Register and asked the people to get themselves registered for the country`s flagship programme.
RGI has completed data entry of 66.68 crore population and biometrics of 3.12 crore people across the country for preparing a NPR.
The vital part of Census 2011 --
the population enumeration -- will be conducted across the
country simultaneously between February 9 and 28.
