Thousands of devotees today converged at the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and mythical river Saraswati here for a holy dip on the auspicious occasion of 'Makar Sankranti' - the Hindu festival which marks the Sun god's transition into the Capricorn zodiac sign.
Braving the winter chill, thousands of Hindu devotees Monday took the holy dip at the Sangam (the confluence of the three rivers, Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati) on the first day of the 44-day long Maagh Mela.
Magh Mela is set to begin today with approximately 25 lakh pilgrims are expected to take a holy dip at Sangam, the confluence of Yamuna, Ganga and mythological Saraswati, on the occasion of Paush Purnima.
JKLF chairman Yasin Malik and his 12 supporters were detained on Tuesday at Sangam on Jammu-Srinagar National highway when they was heading to earthquake-hit Doda region to distribute relief material, police sources said.
