In a bid to tackle the menace of piracy in a more effective manner, the Ministries of Shipping and External Affairs on Monday decided to coordinate their efforts to secure early release of seafarers held hostage by Somali pirates.
In a novel initiative, three-city based maritime organisations have launched a Trauma Management Care Unit (TMCU) for seafarers, subjected to captivity and torture by pirates.
Eleven Indians, who were released
by Somali pirates after 11 months of captivity, have reached
home and the government is making efforts to secure early
release of the remaining 53.
Seafarers associations are
negotiating with Somali pirates for the release of 64 Indian
hostages along with seven vessels which were seized about a
fortnight back, officials said today.
