Authorities Tuesday foiled the plans of separatists to hold a rally at Eidgah in old city by placing more senior Hurriyat leaders under house arrest and deploying large number of security forces in the area.
Senior separatist leaders, including Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, were placed under house arrest to prevent them from visiting the restive Kashmir town of Sopore, where a youth died in police custody last week.
Top Kashmiri separatist leaders have refused the government`s offer to provide them security in the wake of senior cleric Maulana Showkat Ahmad Shah`s assassination two days ago, police said on Sunday.
Chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and several others were taken into preventive custody when they were trying to take out a protest rally on the occasion of Human Rights Day,
officials said here.
