South Sudanese rebels launched an offensive to retake a key town near the border with Ethiopia today in what the United Nations said was a clear violation of a truce agreement.
Armed men raided the offices of a Sudanese newspaper on Saturday evening and severely beat the chief editor who had called for normalisation of ties with Israel, a colleague said.
The Sudanese army said it killed 110 rebels as it repelled an assault in South Kordofan state today, although the insurgents denied the death toll.
The shelling took place close to the border with South Sudan, which seceded in 2011.
