"The DoT committee studying the subject is expected to submit its report next week. The Telecom Commission should probably meet in last week of this month," a Department of Telecom (DoT) official said.
"PAC has requested this ministry to furnish a detailed factual note to them urgently ... On the points raised in the representation (by NGO Telecom Watchdog) for placing before Chairman, PAC," an official source said.
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is looking into whether the mobile operators acted as a cartel during the recent airwave auction that had elicited tepid response, but is yet to order a formal investigation into the matter.
"I had a talk with the Secretary (Telecom) this morning and said it (M&A policy) should be out by September 15... He says he needs another 15 days," Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters after his meeting with industry players today.
"If telecom operators opt to make payment in instalments, then first instalment of all companies will be little over Rs 8,000 crore which they will have to pay by January 15," a government source said.
"Is there a need to take tariffs up? I think absolutely yes. The way the industry is performing and the way the prices have come down...I think it is at unsustainable levels for most of the industry," Kapoor said when asked if there will be a hike in tariffs.
