Almost ten million people in the US live on less than $2 a day and outside the money economy, surviving on food stamps, welfare and free meals provided by public schools and charities, Brookings Institution researcher Laurence Chandy said.
The number of Americans living in
extreme poverty has grown by more than one-third over the past decade.
The ranks of America`s poor swelled to almost 1 in 6 people last year as long-term unemployment left millions of Americans struggling and out of work.
