A deadly blast of arctic air shattered decades-old temperature records as it enveloped the eastern United States on Tuesday, snarling air, road and rail travel, driving energy prices higher and overwhelming shelters for homeless people.
Icy, snow-covered roads and high winds made travel treacherous from the Dakotas to Michigan and Missouri as much of the US braced for dangerously cold temperatures that could break records.
The death toll from a powerful winter storm that pushed through the US midsection into the Northeast has risen to 12.
