Samajwadi Party names Meera Vardhan as Lucknow's mayor candidate

Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Tuesday named Meera Vardhan as mayoral candidate for the upcoming municipal elections in Lucknow.

Meera Vardhan is married to the grandson of Acharya Narendra Dev.

Earlier there were rumours that former minister Juhie Singh will be named for the post.

Earlier in the day SP had named Gulshan Bindu, a transgender as its mayor candidate from Ayodhya.

In the meantime, the SP has also announced names of six other mayoral candidates, including Deepu Manethiya Valmiki (Meerut), IS Tohmar (Bareilly), Yusuf Ansari (Moradabad), Mujahid Kidwai (Aligarh), Rahul Saxena (Jhansi) and Rahul Gupta from Gorakhpur. This year reportedly, six out of 16 municipal corporations are reserved for women mayors.
