UP journalist's killing: PCI asks UP govt to file report

New Delhi: The Press Council of India (PCI) today asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file a report on the killing of a young journalist in the state.

Navin Gupta, who was working for a Hindi daily, was sprayed with bullets yesterday by unidentified assailants near the Nagar Palika market in Billhaur, around 60 km from Kanpur.

"Taking suo motu cognisance of the issue, the PCI chairman has directed the government of Uttar Pradesh, through the chief secretary, secretary (home), director general of police, district magistrate, Kanpur and senior superintendent of police, Kanpur to file a report on the facts of the case," the council said in a release.

Police officials had yesterday said that an old enmity could be the reason behind the killing.
