Bastadi (Uttarakhand): After spending more than two decades in prison, a person is likely to be excited to go back to home.

But not Pushkar Bhatt.

Nearly 20 years ago, Bhatt was reportedly imprisoned for murdering his wife and daughter in a fit of rage. He was recently freed from Uttarakhand's Sitarganj prison after completing his term.

But Bhatt was not prepared for the situation that confronted him after 20 years in prison.

“When I returned, I saw my village had been ruined in a natural disaster. Now no inhabitants live here,” said Bhatt.

Once a beautiful little hamlet, Bastadi was at the centre of the 2016 Uttarakhand cloudburst that killed several people.

“I have nothing to do, I feel scared also,” he said, adding that it feels like a ghost village.

In an unprecedented case, Bhatt has now appealed to administration to put him behind bars once again.

After spending six months in this lonely village, Bhatt now says he can't take the loniless anymore.

In 2017, a Nevada-based homeless man reportedly robbed a bank so he could go back to prison. When asked, he told the judge, he wanted to wake up in warm bed.
