The move has come over four-and-a-half years too late for Niketa Mehta, but it holds out hope for several others like her. The National Commission for Women (NCW), after reviewing the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, 1971, has recommended to the Union health ministry allowing abortions till 24 weeks of pregnancy — four more weeks than what is currently permitted in India.
