Seoul: South Korea and the United States have agreed to push for joint research and information sharing for the safe use of nuclear energy, the Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

The agreement was reached in a meeting in Washington on Monday between South Korean Vice Foreign Minister Ahn Chong-ghee and US Deputy Secretary of Energy Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, Yonhap News Agency reported.

Under the agreement, both promised to jointly carry out research on safe transport, storage and disposal of spent nuclear fuel, while sharing information on relevant techniques, the ministry noted.

The two countries will also conduct research on global nuclear fuel markets, and based on the results, they will cooperate in finding ways of guaranteeing a safe fuel supply to nuclear power plants under any circumstances, the ministry added.
