VVIP chopper scam: Helicopter deal hits rough weather

  • In February this year, several Indian politicians and military officials, including former IAF chief S P Tyagi, were named as alleged beneficiaries of kickbacks in a deal to procure choppers.
  • The Rs 3600-crore contract was awarded to Italian firm Finmeccanica and its United Kingdom-based subsidiary AgustaWestland for supply of a new fleet of 12 helicopters for Indian VVIPs.
  • After furore, Defence Minister AK Antony ordered a CBI enquiry into the case and the government introduced a motion in Rajya Sabha for a 30-member JPC investigation into the matter.
  • As per Italian prosecutors, AgustaWestland`s former chief executive Giuseppe Orsi hired US-born Guido Ralph Haschke, who was then a consultant for the Finmeccanica group, to lead dealings in India to secure the contract.
  • The deal is likely to be scrapped.
