The preparations for the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh have started. With every passing day, the people of the state are witnessing fresh rounds of allegations and counter-allegations. As Mayawati stands tall as the incumbent Chief Minister of the state, the only party which is giving her sleepless nights is Congress. Other two major parties, Samajwadi Party (SP) and BharatiyaJanata Party (BJP) seem to have lost their way.
As Congress is trying hard to find chinks in Maya’s castle, thanks to ‘Yuvraj’ Rahul Gandhi, the Chef Minister is finding it hard to contain the grand old party.
It all started when Rahul Gandhi sneaked into violence-hit Bhatta Parsaul on motorcycle a few months back, making it clear that the upcoming Assembly election of Uttar Pradesh is going to be a fiery affair.
Soon, Maya got a chance to get back her lost ground when Supreme Court cleared her dream project of Noida park, which gave her a chance to project herself as the tallest Dalit leader of all times. As tall as her ‘idols’! The ploy worked but only briefly.
However, Congress under Rahul again sharpened its attack against the Chief Minister, this time over the issue of law and order in the state and poor development.
As Mayawati was finding it difficult to contain this tirade, she came up with another ace up her sleeves – the idea to divide Uttar Pradesh into four states.
As the state is approaching the new year with elections in sight, 2011 will always be etched as the year when Rahul Gandhi took on the mighty ‘Dalit Ki Beti’ but will he be able to revive the Congress in this politically significant state remains to be seen.
