The year 2011 turned out to be a ‘year of yatras’. Politicians to spiritual leaders all boarded the bandwagon.
BJP’s original charioteer LK Advani embarked on a ‘Jan Chetna Yatra’ in the month of October to tap the popular public mood against a corruption-ridden UPA.
BJP`s young turk Anurag Thakur took out Rastriya Ekta Yatra in the month of January. The yatra was supposed to culminate at Lal Chowk in Srinagar, where the saffron party had plans to hoist tricolour. But the yatris were stopped just after they crossed over to Jammu and Kashmir.
Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi in November spearheaded a Jan Sampark Yatra in UP to make people aware about Congress’s “development agenda” besides highlighting the weaknesses of the Mayawati regime.
Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav went on Samajwadi Kranti Rath Yatra in September to bring “a political change” in UP by ousting a “corrupt” BSP regime.
Spiritual leaders of repute also took out yatras. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev launched his Bharat Swabhiman Yatra in UP in September to awake people about corruption and black money. Not to be left behind, spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravishankar also embarked on an anti-corruption yatra again in UP in November.
