On February 19, two Italian marines- Latore Massimilliano and Salvatore Girone- were arrested from the boat Enrica Lexie for killing two fisherman- Jelastine and Ajesh Binki- at sea off Kerala shore. The fishermen had been mistaken for pirates. The arrest led to a huge diplomatic row between India and Italy. The state police immediately ordered a murder enquiry into the issue and the court sent the duo to judicial custody.
The Indian government rook serious note of the issue and lodged a formal complaint with the Italian Ambassador. Defence Minister AK Antony described the killings as "very serious" and an "unfortunate incident". Though the Kerala High Court gave them bail in June, but it was on the condition that they would not leave Indian territories. The Italian government also moved a plea in the Supreme Court challenging the trial of its marines in India. However, the apex court verdict is still awaited.
