Scandinavian nation Norway hogged the spotlight thought out the year but for all wrong reasons. For NRI couple Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya, their Norwegian nightmare began after their kids were taken away to a foster care home, on the charge that they weren’t good parents. Though heart-broke, the couple fought the Norwegian government tooth-and-nail for the custody of their kids. When media highlighted the issue, the government of India was forced to intervene. The then Minister of Foreign Affairs SM Krishna spoke to his counterpart in Norway and after a 12-month-long legal tussle, the Norwegian authorities relented and handed the custody of kids- Abhigyan and Aishwarya- to their parents.
As the dust settled, Norway was once again in news when another NRI couple Chandrasekhar Vallabhneni and his wife Anupam were arrested for abusing their seven year old son. Following their conviction, the father and mother of the boy were sentenced to prison for 18 and 15 months respectively. The boy and his younger brother currently live with their grandparents in India.
